Question about a possible weapon
« on: May 22, 2007, 02:04:24 PM »

I'm working on an application for Apollo and, following the advice on the Mythos main page, I've tried to stay away from major no-nos from other applications.

The veritable brick wall has smacked me in the face when it comes to his weapon. On both of the denied applications, apparently the person used a bow and arrow combination as the weapon.

It was mentioned that this isn't associated with Apollo, but in both the Delian and Pythian hymn translations it is associated with him, but I want to stay away from that. My initial thought was a kithara (but it screamed Sailormercury knockoff) or a tripod (but what the heck could you do with a tripod??).

Any suggestions? I'll bake cookies!

Bow and arrows is kind of off-limits for Apollo since they are so strongly associated with Artemis. However, that doesn't stop you from doing something like having a lyre that doubles as a bow shooting magical arrows. Although, honestly, I would suggest reserving magical arrow generation to a much later power up. XD

You could maybe do something weird with a plectrum. Or, as with Aphrodite, incorporate imagery into an ordinarily irrelevant Greek weapon - Dite uses a polearm with a seashell on the end. I would be absolutely pleased as punch if you could come up with something that wasn't polearm-esque, since we have a bunch of dudes running around with those at the moment, but I'm certainly not going to tell you to change it if you decide to go that route, since spears and such are Greek period appropriate.

If you need more suggestions, just let me know. XD I know mine aren't the best. XD;

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I totally agree that the bow-and-arrow bit is much more Artemis than Apollo---I think my brain had just gone on blue-screen-of-death shutdown.

I had one of those "well DUH!" moments last night that gave me an idea for a weapon. D'ya think a tripod or a polearm with a tripod on the end would work? It wouldn't be used immediately during his first attack---just a good whap-someone-about-the-head type weapon. That is, until his second attack, which I envision as more of a sparkly-poo prophecy based...thing.

I don't see why not. Although I'm having a bit of trouble envisioning it, since the tripod is technically a seat, I think? XD

Ooh...Apollo, the stadium seat carrier!  greaterthan

...wow...my brain works in weird ways. Scratch that!

According to good ole Wikipedia, the tripod was a seat/sacrificial altar that Apollo's priestesses sat on to deliver their prophecies and put bay laurel boughs in when they didn't have their hind ends planted in them. Not so hot for a weapon as is, but an armature at the end of a spear that resembles a tripod might work.

I'll play with some sketches tonight and see what transpires. Seriously though, thanks for being a sounding board.
